Charlie Hebdo

Freedom of speech has to be across the board, in no way ambiguous, or hypocritical; one rule for all - there are no rules. If it means we have to learn to ignore or just lighten up even, then it has to be worth it. Learnt that a school me.

  2. Ben Sloan So what about inciting racial hatred. Is that ok? Do minorities just need to man up and get thicker skin?

Adam Grant Basically yes, it's about being bigger and better than the dickheads who use their right to say the wrong thing, in order to protect your right to say possibly the right thing.

Adam Grant Those inciting racial hatred will always be in the minorities themselves.

Ben Sloan No. Total freedom of speech would allow groups such as Britain first to spread hateful propoganda. Our children will need to ability to distinguish between this and the truth. Something that children (and many adults for that matter) do not have the ability to do.

Adam Grant They'd do it anyway. We can teach our children the truth. We ourselves are capable of making up our own minds what is right. We don't need laws for that, we don't need a nanny fanny state. Best to keep everyone's cards on the table, dangerous to push it further underground.

Ben Sloan It's a very easy thing for people from good up bringing to say. Because we do not understand what it is like to be given conflicting messages at the critical stages of our development when we are unable to distinguish right and wrong. Unfortunately the structure of morality that we enjoyed as youngsters is rapidly dissolving.

Adam Grant Sticks and stones need to be regulated against, but not the words, we've got enough political correctness for that. Oscar Wilde's twist on the famous Voltaire quote in support of freedom of speech,
'I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an ass of yourself.'

Paul Thomson The problem is too many people use the term 'freedom of speech' to justify acting like wankers.
